My newest film is about to start rolling this friday. We are shooting on the 35MM Panavision Millennium, which we were able to get through the Panavision Grant.
We are going to shoot some flashback scenes using a speed controller to do speed ramping. We are doing this to seperate his two worlds of reality vs subconscious. The primary rates we are shooting at are 24 frames to 48.
The speed controller controls the frame rates in addition to the shutter angle. This makes the exposure seamless because of the exposure compensation with the shutter opening to 90 degees from 180, which is equivalent to opening a stop. This is something we tested at Panavision Hollywood and the only problem we saw was a less organic look when the shutter is set at 90 degrees. It didn’t look bad it was just a different feel.
